Far West Boulevard and North Hills Drive Safe Routes to School Improvements
The Austin Transportation and Public Works Department is developing safer routes to Doss Elementary and Murchison Middle Schools, as well as connections to Beverly S. Sheffield Northwest District Park and other destinations.
Project Background
The project team has evaluated North Hills Drive between Mesa Drive and Balcones Drive, Hart Lane between North Hills Drive and just north of Far West Boulevard, and Far West Boulevard between Northledge Drive and Beverly S. Sheffield Northwest District Park entry off MoPac Expressway. Together, these streets offer connectivity to, from and between destinations around Northwest Austin, including two schools, parks, commercial and residential destinations.
Based on feedback received from the community during the public process, changes were made to the initial proposal to add additional sidewalk improvements and pedestrian crossings along North Hills Drive. Further evaluation of Far West Boulevard and Hart Lane continue with anticipated changes announced in Spring of 2024.
Funding for these improvements
are made possible through the District 10 Quarter Cent fund, the Safe Routes to School Program and
the Bikeways
Program of the 2016 Mobility Bond.
Project Updates
August 2024: Parking pockets on Far West Boulevard installed
Transportation and Public Works recently installed parking pockets
serving the intramural fields fronting Far West Boulevard between Northledge
Drive and Hart Lane. The changes provide separation for people on bicycles,
protection for pedestrians along the sidewalk and space for people to park
along Far West Boulevard where they could not legally do so before.
July 2023: Construction on North Hills Drive begins
Construction has begun on new sidewalks, bikeways pedestrian crossings, a shared use path and bus stop improvements along North Hills Drive between Mesa Drive and Balcones Drive. Read the email update to stakeholders here.
