Bergstrom Spur Trail Network

The City of Austin Capital Delivery Services is developing the Bergstrom Spur Trail in partnership with Austin Transportation and Public Works Urban Trails Program.  Once complete, the Bergstrom Spur Trail will be approximately 6.5 miles long and connect Vinson Drive in south Austin to East Riverside Drive and US-183 in southeast Austin, along with many other parks, neighborhoods, and destinations.

Project Background

illustrated map of project limits
  • The Urban Trails Program identified the Bergstrom Spur Trail as a high-priority project in the 2014 Urban Trails Plan. The trail was prioritized for its potential to greatly enhance local urban trail access in southwest Austin, improve connectivity, and provide a viable route to walk or bike to the airport.
  • The Bergstrom Spur was also identified as an important link for connecting regional pedestrian, bicycle, and transit networks in the 2017 Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization Regional Active Transportation Plan and the 2019 Austin Strategic Mobility Plan
  • In 2019, the Urban Trails Program partnered with the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) to develop proposed concepts for the urban trail and potential future transit connections.

Bergstrom Spur Trail Network Projects

The Bergstrom Spur Trail will be developed as three segments: Western, Central and Eastern. Once complete, the three segments will function and feel like a cohesive, continuous trail.

Western Segment: Vinson Drive to South Congress Avenue

The Western Segment of the Bergstrom Spur Trail Network will span approximately 1.12 miles and connect existing bike lanes on Vinson Drive to South Congress Avenue. This segment will provide access to St. David's South Austin Medical Center, St. Elmo Elementary School and Park, and Capital Metro's South Congress Transit Center.  View a video overview of the project segment
Estimated Timeline
  • Planning: Fall 2021 – Spring 2022
  • Design: Spring 2022 – Fall 2025
  • Construction: Fall 2025 – Fall 2027

Central Segment: South Congress Avenue to Todd Lane

The Central Segment of the Bergstrom Spur Trail Network will span approximately 1.85 miles and connect South Congress Avenue to Todd Lane. This segment will provide access to several industrial, commercial, residential destinations south of East Ben White Boulevard. View a video overview of the project segment

Project Process

Preliminary Engineering Reports
In Spring 2022, the project team released Preliminary Engineering Reports (PERs) for the Western and Central segments of the Bergstrom Spur Trail Network. The PERs show the recommended routes for the trail segments and evaluates project considerations including environmental and drainage concerns, nearby property ownership, and more.
Alternatives Analysis
In Spring 2022, the project team released an Alternatives Analysis for the Eastern segment of the Bergstrom Spur Trail Network. The analysis examines potential routes the trail segment could follow between Todd Lane, East Riverside Drive, and US 183. The analysis evaluates project considerations including environmental concerns, drainage concerns, and nearby property ownership and provides a matrix of factors to determine a preferred alternative.
Bergstrom Spur Corridor Study
In 2019, the Urban Trail Program partnered with the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) to develop the Bergstrom Spur Corridor Study. The study examined existing conditions along the Bergstrom Spur, developed concepts for building an urban trail for walking and biking along the corridor, and identified opportunities to incorporate future connections to transit. View the study documents:
Public Involvement
The project team hosted several public input opportunities throughout the development of the Bergstrom Spur Corridor Study:
November 20, 2019: Public Meeting
The project team hosted an in-person open house to share proposed concepts for the urban trail and potential future transit connections. This comment period closed on December 13, 2019.
July 21 – August 14, 2020: Virtual Open House
The project team hosted a virtual open house with an open comment period.  View the videos from the open house:
December 9, 2020 – January 6, 2021: Survey
The project team accepted public comments on the Bergstrom Spur Final Report from December 9, 2020 - January 6, 2021. View common themes from public input and read frequently asked questions:
September 16 – October 30, 2022: 60% Design Virtual Open House (Western + Central Segments)
Austin Public Works held a virtual open house to gather feedback on 60% design plans for the trail's Western and Central segments from September 16 – October 30, 2022. View the virtual open house
