South Pleasant Valley Road, Todd Lane, and Burleson Road
Austin Transportation and Public Works has completed multimodal improvements along Todd Lane and Burleson Road to include new pedestrian crossings, protected bike lanes and space for the future construction of Metro Rapid bus stops at Iroquois Lane and Mission Hill Drive.
Following a extended community engagement process, TPW is now moving forward with planned multimodal improvements along South Pleasant Valley Road between Onion Creek Park and St. Elmo Road. The changes are expected to improve safety, comfort and accessibility for everyone that uses this street. The planned work will also support the construction of six Metro Rapid bus stations to better serve the neighborhoods of Franklin Park and Dove Springs with faster and more frequent bus service.
Planned Improvements
- A second left turn lane at William Cannon Drive and South Pleasant Valley Road - Complete!
- 15 new or improved pedestrian crossings
- A roundabout at Teri Road
- Shared use pathways from Nuckols Crossing Road to William Cannon Drive.
- Protected bike lanes from St. Elmo Road to Nuckols Crossing Road with elevated, separated shared use pathways at the intersections of Stassney Lane, Palo Blanco Lane and Village Square Drive

Spring 2023 Update
The initial phase of work for the South Pleasant Valley Road safety and mobility improvements project is now complete. In March, a second left turn lane was installed at South Pleasant Valley Road and William Cannon Drive.
New second left turn lane
recently completed at South Pleasant Valley Road and William Cannon Drive.
The
next phase of work will occur from St. Elmo Road to Button Bend Drive to
prepare street space for the construction of two new Metro Rapid stops serving
Franklin Park apartments and the Austin Lighthouse – Travis Association for the
Blind.
The
second major phase of work will consist of the new roundabout at Teri Road and
South Pleasant Valley Road to support slower, safer crossings and
more continuous travel for people driving or riding a bus. This work is
anticipated to begin in late 2023.
October 2022: Update to proposed designs for South Pleasant Valley Road (from St. Elmo Road to Onion Creek Park)
September 2021: Final design for Todd Lane and
Burleson Road and proposed updated design for South Pleasant Valley Road
After reviewing community feedback on the initial proposal, the project team updated and completed
improvements to Todd Lane and Burleson Road between Oltorf Street and St. Elmo
Road to enhance safety, mobility, and transit access.

In response to community feedback and the addition of a new planned MetroRapid transit route,
the project team opened another round of community feedback through a Community Q&A.
December 2019: Kick-off meeting for the project
The Austin Transportation Department hosted
a kickoff meeting on December 11, 2019 to gather input regarding the mobility
and safety needs of all who use these streets. A survey was available until
January 26, 2020 for feedback from community members.
Preliminary Designs
Project background and goals
The City of Austin’s Corridor Program Office published the South Pleasant Valley Road Corridor Mobility Plan in June 2020, which details short and long term solutions for South Pleasant Valley Road.
Austin Transportation and Public Works is evaluating near-term improvements to provide a protected bikeway and improved pedestrian crossings along the corridor. The proposed changes are expected to:
- Improve predictability and safety for everyone using the street by providing protected space for people bicycling
- Reduce crashes for all modes
- Encourage slower motor vehicle speeds and reduce high-risk speeding
- Shorten crossing distances for people walking
- Maintain comparable motor vehicle travel times
Funding
Funding for these near-term improvements is available from the 2016 Mobility Bond Bikeways and Safe Route to School programs, the 2018 Bond Pedestrian Crossing program, Capital Metro and the City of Austin’s Quarter Cent program.
