Intersection Safety/Vision Zero
The Intersection Safety/Vision Zero Program provides a comprehensive and coordinated approach to making Austin’s streets safer by delivering critical safety improvements at high crash intersections citywide.
The 2016 Mobility Bond provides $15 million for fatality reduction strategies for locations listed on the Top Crash Location Intersection Priorities Improvement List.
Projects in Progress
Corridor Construction Program Intersections
Projects are selected using a prioritization process that analyzes crash frequency and crash rates in coordination with fatality rates and severity of injuries. A list of 28 top crash, high priority locations was created in June 2016. Each of these 28 intersections receives a safety review that recommends engineering improvements.
With 2016 Mobility Bond funding, safety improvements will be constructed at approximately 15 intersections. Additionally, the Intersection Safety/Vision Zero team is coordinating with the Corridor Mobility Program to recommend safety improvements for 10 intersections that overlap with planned Corridor Construction Program work.
Safety improvements can include intersection reconfiguration and reconstruction, construction of new medians, modification of existing medians, improvements to pedestrian and bicycle facilities, and construction of traffic and pedestrian signals. Improvements are coordinated with other programs when possible, including Sidewalks, Bikeways, and Safe Routes to School.
