Financial Services and Human Resources

Last year, the Austin City Council approved six strategic outcomes focusing on creating a “government that works." The objective is a city government that works effectively and collaboratively for all residents in a way that is equitable, ethical and innovative. While the strategic outcomes specifically mention Austin residents, the City of Austin’s Financial Services and Human Resource departments are essential to successfully meeting this goal.
In 2017, Financial Services was recognized by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for excellence in financial reporting. It was also recognized by the National Procurement Institute for excellence in procurement. This prestigious award is earned by those organizations that distinguish themselves by obtaining a high score based on standardized criteria. These criteria measure innovation, professionalism, productivity, e-procurement and leadership attributes of the procurement organization.
Financial Services also received a Certificate of Excellence from the International City/County Management Association for excellence in performance management initiatives. These achievements highlight the high standard of work completed by Financial Services and the strength of the department’s commitment to the strategic goals adopted by City Council.
The city’s Human Resources Department launched several technology initiatives to improve the benefits management experience for City of Austin employees. The improved Human Resources Portal now integrates wellness data into the system, allowing employees to see which wellness classes they have already taken, along with those that will be offered in the future. Additionally, a new module was added to allow employees to add their beneficiaries electronically through the Human Resources Portal. The new functionality allows employees to better understand their benefits and electronically complete paperwork, all while reducing administrative costs.
The City of Austin Human Resources Portal was featured at the annual State and Local Government Benefits Association meeting. These innovations not only improved the benefits management experience for City of Austin employees, but ultimately create an efficient and effective workplace and municipal government.
