Emergency Medical Service
Austin/Travis County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responds to thousands of incidents every year. With lives depending on the ability to provide the fastest and most efficient service, in 2017 EMS launched several technology projects to improve speed and connectivity.
For staff in the field, the department deployed Wi-Fi hotspots at 10 stations to improve internet connectivity. Additionally, the department issued tablet devices to EMS captains, with the goal of creating a mobile office solution. Both of these projects will improve productivity for staff deployed on ambulances.
As the Austin area continues to grow, it is critical that EMS document the increase in demand for its services. In 2017, EMS launched an open-data portal featuring a dashboard that highlights current performance metrics, such as number of incidents, type of responses and more. Additionally, this data is integrated with a predictive analytics solution to help predict where the next incident might occur.
