Development Services and Municipal Court
For many municipalities, it has been a challenge to bring technology solutions into complicated systems such as the courts or permitting process. In the City of Austin, the Municipal Court and the Development Services Department rose to the challenge by leveraging technology to improve the customer service experience.
In 2017, the Municipal Court continued initiatives to digitize many of their services: updating the new case management system (completion expected by 2021), improving record-keeping, and upgrading the telecommunications system to Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP). These new technology solutions will positively impact the experience of Austin residents in the court system.
Also in 2017, Development Services launched a bilingual, multimedia campaign branded “Building a Better Austin”. Content customized by department staff targeted middle-income homeowners to educate them about permitting requirements for home improvements and renovations. The campaign was recognized with a National Association of Government Communicators Award.
