Barton Skyway Mobility and Safety Improvements

Upcoming changes to Barton Skyway in 2024

Between 2020 and 2023, protected bikeways and intersection improvements were installed along Barton Skyway. In the summer of 2024, the Austin Transportation and Public Works Department (TPW) launched a public process to inform potential changes to these previously installed improvements.
Options were shared in a virtual open house to gather feedback about the proposed changes. Feedback was accepted from April 22, 2024 through June 2, 2024.
See the community feedback report for a summary of all public input received and a stakeholder email update for next steps.

Summer 2020: Safety improvements at Barton Skyway and Barton Hills Drive intersection
The intersection at Barton Skyway and Barton Hills Drive was reconstructed as a protected intersection. The design now includes curb extensions, ADA-accessible curb ramps, and bikeway connections. Where protected bicycle lanes intersect, protected intersections are an engineering best practice. Protected intersection designs keep physical protection and user separation continuous through intersections.
