Parkfield Drive
Austin Transportation and Public Works (TPW) is making changes on Parkfield Drive (Mearns Meadow Boulevard to Payton Gin Road) and near Wooldridge Elementary School to enhance safety and mobility for all.
Project Background
ATD evaluated Parkfield Drive from Mearns Meadow Boulevard to Payton Gin Road for changes to enhance the safety and mobility of everyone who uses these streets. This project improves bicycle comfort and connectivity, pedestrian crossings and overall safety for everyone using Parkfield Drive as well as improvements to several nearby pedestrian crossings around Wooldridge Elementary School and along Payton Gin Road. The proposed changes were first identified in the Austin Bicycle Plan, Safe Routes to School Infrastructure Reports, and the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan. The changes are expected to:
- Improve predictability and safety for everyone using the street by providing protected space for people bicycling of all ages and abilities.
- Improve comfort and safety for people walking and crossing the street to get to school, transit stops, parks, or other neighborhood destinations.
Project Updates
November 2021: Phase 2 – Protected intersection and pedestrian crossings
The second phase of project construction will include fixing sidewalk gaps along Parkfield Drive from Payton Gin Road to Mearns Meadow Boulevard. ATD, in partnership with the Safe Routes to School and Sidewalk programs, will also install new curb extensions, new ramps, a sidewalk on the west side of Parkfield Drive between Payton Gin Road and Norseman Terrace and a protected intersection at Parkfield Drive and Payton Gin Road.
Pedestrian crossings serving Wooldridge Elementary school are currently being constructed, and should finish by early 2022. The protected intersection at Payton Gin Road and Parkfield Drive is expected to begin in December 2021. Additional work along Parkfield Drive will follow. All work in phase 2 is expected to be complete in Spring 2022.
