This data set displays the number of households benefiting from Customer Assistance Program (CAP) for each fiscal year.

The City of Austin has one of the most generous Customer Assistance Programs in the nation. Utility bill discounts are a key component of the program. Discounts are provided to customers who are already receiving benefits through a variety of federal, state, county, or city assistance programs.

Under the program, qualifying Austin Energy customers receive a waiver of the $10 monthly electric customer charge; are exempt from paying the portion of the community benefit charge that supports the Utility Bill Discount Program; and receive a 10% discount on their kWh usage charge.

Austin Water customers also receive a discount on the water/wastewater customer charge as well as a volumetric discount on a customer’s water usage. Watershed Protection provides a 50% discount on the drainage fee. Public Works under a separate qualification waives the transportation user fee.

Austin Energy generates power through a diverse generation portfolio of natural gas, coal, nuclear, renewable resources, and purchased power. Browse data about our power plants including, percent owned, fuel type used, capacity in MW, and installation year.

Austin Energy owns and operates two natural gas-fired power plants in Austin: the Decker Creek Power Station and the Sand Hill Energy Center. The utility also owns 50% of units 1 and 2 at the coal-fired Fayette Power Project in LaGrange, Texas. Additionally, Austin Energy owns 16% of the South Texas Nuclear Project in Matagorda County outside of Houston.

(Over)/under power supply adjustment recovery represents the difference between actual power supply costs and the amount recovered through the power supply adjustment rates. Values in parenthesis represent an over-recovery for that year. Find more information at http://austinenergy.com/go/reports.

This data set shows Austin Energy's current system rate, and the 2% affordability limit set by the Austin City Council. The difference between the current system rate and the 2% affordability limit is shown as both a dollar figure and a percentage. Note- the current system rate is based on budgeted system rates and is effective at the beginning of each fiscal year.

Peak demand is the highest point of energy use on any given day and typically occurs between the hours of 4 and 6 p.m. Austin Energy’s energy efficiency and demand reduction programs are designed to lower energy usage and reduce the amount of load on the electric system. This report is the result of the Austin City Code 6-7's Energy Conservation Audit and Disclosure Ordinance approves in November 2008 (amended in April 2011) to improve the energy efficiency of homes and buildings that receive electricity from Austin Energy. The ordinance meets one of the goals of the Austin Climate Protection Plan, Which is to offset 1200 megawatts of Peak Energy by 2025.

The Audit results are averages of the energy efficiency measures evaluated on site during the audit.

This data set compares the Austin Energy average rate per kilowatt hour (kWh) to the Texas average rate per kWh. In developing the Texas average rate, we eliminate all electric entities that do not serve residential customers or whose load is less than 3% residential.

This calculation is based on information provided by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) and is calendar year information. The average system rate, for both Texas and Austin Energy, is based on total electric sales revenues ($) divided by total energy (kWh sales).
